In 1998 Jimmy Carter said the following in his State of the Union address;
Every day we spend more than $120 million for foreign oil. This slows our economic growth, it lowers the value of the dollar overseas, and it aggravates unemployment and inflation here at home.
Fast forward to 2008 we spend billions, BIG $$$$$$ EVERYDAY and we have reserves we CAN”T touch OR refine. Why can’t we touch our national reserves? Because we “might” mess up some pristine land in the least inhabitable place in the United States. Maybe we can go there when some foreign government buys that land with our petrol dollars and charges us admission while they explore for the fuels hidden below our very feet. this affects our national security as much as an invasion from a foreign enemy.
